I still really want to make an electric car. The main argument against electric vehicles I’ve heard recently is that they deliver an environmental mess courtesy of the batteries. From what I’ve read tonight, that just isn’t the case. According to the Electric Auto Association:

The Battery Council International reports that 93% of all battery lead is recycled. A higher recycling rate than newspapers (55%) or aluminum cans (42%). Typical new lead-acid batteries contain 60-80% recycled lead and plastic. A true recycling success!

Also the consensus seems to be that batteries will last 3-4 years depending on usage. Most of the articles I found tonight were a year or more old, so I’m hoping that there is new battery technology now, or coming in the near future. When I am ready to start on my electric car I will do some more in-depth research.

The article that got me all excited about electric cars again can be found here on the website Treehugger.com Please let me know if you have any better information on new and improved batteries.

Yes it’s true! You can convert your VW into an electric car with the kits available at e-volks.com. It’s pretty amazing really. I read about this website in Make magazine, and it looks really cool. The guy in the article made his car not only electric, but solar as well, by putting a $350 solar panel on the roof. You won’t get the range that a factory-made solar would get (if they existed) but you can get enough range for most people’s daily needs.

Maybe it’s time to find that old VW and make it into an awesome car of the future! The site says that you can use the kits with other cars as well, it just takes a little more work.

It seems to me that with the new battery technology from this post you might even be able to make a car with better range than the one in the Make magazine article. By the way, the article is available online, but you have to have a subscription to read it. You might as well just join up if this kind of thing interests you; it’s an awesome magazine.

=============================================================

Gotta pay the bills:

The home security systems are used for the protection against any kind of burglary, fire losses, and accidental situation, caused by electric short cut. The most reputable and advanced security system is known as adt security devices which are used for the different safety measures. The brinks security systems and appliance are more reliable and affordable with the exclusive safety measures based on the advanced technology.

The Discovery channel is 3/4 of the way through their four part series on the car of the future, appropriately called Future Car. The most recent episode was about fuel and hit on everything from ethanol, bio-diesel, hydrogen and solar all the way to having a car powered by air.

A few of the finer details are a little off, but all in all the shows have been great. It’s really cool to see what the designers are thinking about, and what is on the way. Perhaps the most interesting thing for me in this episode on fuel is that a lot of the future is already available now. Of course they showed prototype cars that can do some amazing things, but really the near future of fueling our vehicles is not so much about bringing in new technology, as it’s about getting more people on-board with the advances that are already commercially available like ethanol, biodiesel and hybrids.

One of the great things about cable is that you get more than one chance to see a good show. If you missed any of Future Car, check out the schedule for your second chance.

=============================================================

Gotta pay the bills:

The exquisite combination of exterior paint colors is used by the professional exterior designers to give a unique look to the fence gate. There is a need of fine-quality material for the establishment of driveways in the patio or garage.

This is an excellent movie, and it makes GM look REALLY bad. I’m sure that GM will have plenty to say in defense, but I won’t be able to believe any of it after the strong case presented in the film. People were lined up, conducting a 24 hour vigil with money in their hands to buy the EV1 electric car, and instead of just selling the cars that were right there on the lot in working order GM crushed them. The GM spokesman said the cars were not being destroyed as we watched footage of the crushed cars. It’s astounding. From what I saw in the film, GM represents some of the worst traits of humanity. Their shortsighted, narrow-minded, greedy, wasteful, and self-centered view is really just sad.

GM is not the only one to blame though. If you really want to know who killed the electric car you will have to go see the movie. If you care about the big picture it is a must-see.

For more info and things you can do go to their website.

This new movie is apparently so dangerous that it can only be seen if you are in just the right place at the right time. It may be the Dick Cheney of environmental films, primarily hiding in an undisclosed location. All mildly-to-moderately funny jokes aside, you really have to work to see “Who Killed the Electric Car?”. If you live in Wisconsin, you only get one chance, so pack up and start driving to Milwaukee.

The film opens on different dates all across the country, and of course the information on the website may not be complete, but it’s certainly a limited release.

It’s the story of the EV-1 electric car, and it’s short life before being crushed by a whole gaggle of evil-doers… but I’m not biased. I haven’t seen the film yet (it’s not open in my area) but reviews seem mostly positive. With luck I’ll be able to report back in a couple of weeks. Stay tuned… and in the meantime, check out the film’s website:

George Clooney has a new car that he showed off in the recent “Green Issue” of Vanity Fair. It’s called the Tango and is made by Commuter Cars Corporation out of Spokane Washington. I have not had the privilege of seeing one in person, but from the website they look pretty awesome.

The Tango is a two-seater where the passenger sits behind the driver. You can fit two of them side-by-side in a normal lane, park them perpendicularly on the street, and yet still go zero to 60 in four seconds. The safety and stability info from the website is pretty compelling, but since I personally am rather safety obsessed I would like to see information from independent crash studies.

I think most Americans won’t be willing to switch to such a small car right away, but if suddenly there was a narrow motorcycle/Tango express lane on the highway, there would be many a weary commuter running to the Tango dealership.

While this car by itself is not a Renewable Energy source, it broadens the options on how we could break from our dependance on fossil fuels.

More info here: www.commutercars.com
